What actually is "Cream of Tartar"
Cream of Tartar
I was stopped this week in the Supermarket aisle and asked what Cream of Tartar was as there was a container in the trolley on top of my groceries.
Now I did kind of um and err and told her it was something to do with Tartaric Acid from grapes in wine making but that was all i knew about what it is (you can google it). She then asked what you do with it besides Play dough?
Funnily enough its not the first time i have been asked. I do know a few things you can do with it so i thought I'd share them here too. If you know some more let us know in the comments :)
- Adds creamier texture to sugar baking's like icing and frosting.
- When making Meringues. It increases the volume of foam and helps it not to collapse so fast.
- Stabilises whipped cream. Add a pinch when whipping cream.
- Making Play dough.
- Can be added to boiling sugar to prevent crystals
- 2 cups White Vinegar to ½ cup Cream of Tartar makes a great cleaning product for porcelain like baths and vanity and for pots and pans.
- Making a paste from Cream of Tartar and a little water can relieve itching from minor bites.
