Follow these simple tips to keep your garden and lawns looking lush this summer.
Gardening is one of my ultimate passions. Over the years we've moved around Australia and lived in many different houses with different climates, different plants and different lawn varieties. I am sharing with you my top simple tips to keeping your lawn and garden looking lovely during the summer.
Best Garden Care Tips for Summer
Mulch
- Mulch your garden beds! This is key to keeping the moisture in, keeping the temperature down, keeping the weeds at bay and adding some nutrients back into the soil. Use a coarse mulch, about 5-7cm thick coverage
Wetting Agent
- Apply soil wetters to garden beds and lawn, this will break down the waxy coating on soils and allow the water to reach the root zone
Watering
- Water your garden and lawn less often but for a longer period of time, 30 minutes before 9am, 2-3 times a week is ideal
Weeding
- Remove weeds so they don't steal nutrients and water. They can also attract insects and some diseases. Pull them out while they are small and easy.
Mowing
- Keep you lawn a little longer, don't cut it more then once a fortnight and don't cut it short, set your lawn mower height for 6cm. Long grass wears better, keeps the moisture down and looks lush
Good news, it's not too late to get into the garden and get planting.
Try heat-loving flowering plants, they will grow quickly in warm temperatures and will soon be providing colour in your garden.
Plants like angelonia, lantana, ageratum, coleus, pentas, portulaca, salvia and zinnia.
In your vegetable garden, start growing warm-season vegetable such as tomatoes, eggplants, capsicum, cucumbers and summer squash.
This was our house when we moved in at the begin of January and with a little love and care it became the best looking lawn on the street within 2 months.
