Fun non toxic clay to play, dry and paint.
Salt Dough is great fun, easy to make and can be dried and painted. We've made lots of things with salt dough, including kids hands prints to post to distant grandparents and little Christmas trees with a cookie cutter which i popped a hole in the top and used at wrapped Christmas present tags and ornaments.
Salt Dough
2 cups Plain or All Purpose Flour
1/2 cup Salt
1/2 - 1 cup of water.
Colouring if desired.
- If you want to make a coloured dough then its best to put colouring into the water before mixing into the flour.
- In a large bowl mix your flour and salt.
- Slowly stir in the water little bits at a time. You'll probably need about 3/4 cup. Stir it in until it becomes like a cookie dough consistency.
- In the bowl roll it into a ball and then cover with plastic wrap and pop in fridge for 10-15min to firm up.
Knead well and then use as desired.
Drying
Lay on trays lined with baking paper.
Bake on a really low oven about 100 Celsius for several hours
How long to bake exactly depends on your craft. You want it to dry out and not to go brown.
Painting
Once fully dried and cooled. These can be painted Acrylics are best we think. You can also use PVA and stick things on to it.
note: the hand print we did in the top picture we actually tipped glitter into it before baking. It cooked well and although some glitter came off after baking there was still plenty on it.
