Exciting things happening at Kelloggs and a Giveaway

Kellogs Are Open for Breakfast

First up this new place "Open For Breakfast" where you can have a conversation with the Kelloggs "Open for Breakfast Editorial Team" about the Kellogg company. They are sharing more about who they are and discussing the issues you care about. From what’s in our food and how it’s made, to what we’re doing to contribute to a better world.

Its an interesting place to have a look around lots of questions people have asked, information about the company and a couple of celebrity articles.  I found the environmental information on the factory in NSW really interesting.

You can find the site here:   Kelloggs Open For Breakfast

I had the opportunity to ask Gina Levy the Senior Nutrition Manager ANZ  at Kellogg's some questions about breaky,  you can see my interview here.  Thanks Gina for your time!

1. I want an all round healthy cereal option that can cover the whole family, what should I be looking for?

The best way to start the day is with a balanced breakfast including a grain serve (ideally cereal!), a dairy serve or your favourite alternative and some fruit or protein.

Sultana Bran seems to tick the box for a lot of families - healthy, tasty, packed with fibre and whole grain and perfect with milk or yoghurt –but ultimately it comes down to individual tastes. Luckily, we have lots to choose from so spend some time in the cereal aisle.

2. What is the difference between GI and GL?

There are couple key different between GI and GL.  As you might already know, GI stands for Glycemic Index which is a measure of how sugars (glucose) in a food enter the bloodstream over time. GL stands for Glycemic Load, which takes into account the carbohydrate content of the food in addition to the GI. So one of the key differences is that GL takes into account carbohydrate content of the food as well as its effect on blood sugars.

Also, the way they’re represented is slightly different - low GI foods are defined as those below 55 while low GL foods are those below 10. High GI foods are those above 70 and high GL foods are those greater than 20.

3. I'd like less salt in my kids cereals, what do I need to look at to ensure they are getting low/no Sodium?

Low sodium foods are those that contain less than 120mg of sodium per 100g of food. It’s not easy to find foods that contain no sodium since sodium is a natural mineral found in almost all foods, even those that grow in the ground. The easiest way to keep sodium intake low is to eat plenty of fresh foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes and seeds.

When it comes to our cereals specifically, we have several low sodium breakfast cereals such as Mini Wheats, Just Right, All Bran Muesli,Sustain and Special K Protein Crunchy 3 Grain Granola.

4. What can I add to my family's bowl of cereal to make it healthier?

Really glad you asked this question! Our nutrition team recommends a good breakfast that includes grains, dairy and some fruit or protein. That could take many forms such as a bowl of cereal with milk and fruit; a granola, yoghurt and berry parfait or toast with an egg and ricotta cheese.

5. What is on your breakfast table everyday?

Breakfast time in my house is a mad scramble to get out the door, get the kids dressed, fed and off to school whilst we get ready to head off to work. It has to be quick and easy and something the kids will actually finish.

Both my kids love cereal and milk – Special K Original for my son and Protein granola for my daughter, 30 seconds and it’s on the table. My son especially loves mixing Rice Bubbles in yoghurt with strawberries – he calls it popping cereal.

They also love warm toast with nut butter or cream cheese.  And they almost always ask for a glass of milk which helps them to feel full.

On the weekends, we have more time for some scrambled eggs, delicious Middle Eastern baked eggs and things that require a bit more preparation.

I love my Original Kellogg's Special K for breakfast, this way I can have different toppings each morning, eg: strawberrys or bananas, honey, or just plain. And living in a house of 7 (husband and kids) we all love to have our Kellogg's Special K with different toppings.

Me. Eggs. But, my kids, they live on rice bubbles! They would rather starve than eat anything else! The day they ask for meat or veges I will be amazed and concerned!
